Beginners are welcome.

Gain a deeper understanding of how your body is designed to move and self-heal. Nia Co-founder Debbie Rosas shares a wealth of somatic education in an engaging blend of experiential learning and movement. Discover The Body's Way and how to gain the most from each Nia experience. This workshop-format class will empower you to move more freely through your entire life.

  • Exercise routines can be, well, routine. Nia breaks the mold. Minute-by-minute, my instructor leads us through a shifting pattern of movement vocabulary drawn from modern dance, martial arts and yoga. The choreography fits the music and its tempo, energy and mood.

    John , High School Teacher
  • I love how Nia choreography is simple, allows for interpretation and freedom of expression, and requires no experience whatsoever. My philosophy is that fitness should be pleasurable and never feel like punishment. The only limitations on our life's possibilities are the ones we create.

    Sandra ,
  • Nia has shared this awareness with me. I wake up excited to move and experience life in sensation. Nia resets me when I am off-center or bummed. My darkest times and my most joyful times are expressed in Nia. Nia is alchemy for my body, mind, emotions and spirit to transition into joy.

Nia inspires me to continue on a personal journey of self-discovery, self actualization and healing. For me, learning is one of the most exciting journeys and being in a body is one of the most poetic and romantic experiences. Kriszti VanSlyke

Nia Black Belt Teacher

I grew up in Hungary studying a wide variety of dance and movement forms, including 13 years of Classical Ballet, Ballroom Dancing and Jazz. After coming to the US in 1991 I learned Tai-Chi, Yoga, Modern Dance, Ballet Folclorico and others. In 1994 during my last year of college at Portland State University, I took my first Nia classes with Debbie and Carlos. None of my previous movement experiences came close to matching the Joy I received from Nia.

Renee Erickson

Nia Black Belt Teacher

I've moved back to Oregon and am thrilled to be able to share Nia with new and old friends in Portland! I attended Lewis and Clark College and Lincoln H.S. in Portland and taught at the Pacific NW Outward Bound School in the early 70's. My husband, Rolf, was born here and is a Nia Trainer. I've been enthusiastically teaching Nia in Oregon and Iowa since the beginning of 2003. I have been teaching Transcendental Meditation in Oregon and around the world since 1972.

Laurie Bass

Nia Teacher Trainer

Laurie is a creative mover, athlete, artist, yogi and member of the Nia Training Faculty as a White Belt and Nia 5 Stages Trainer. Her education includes degrees in Mathematics and Psychology from Pacific University. Laurie lives near Portland, Oregon, home to the international headquarters for the Nia Technique where she teaches classes, workshops and holds trainings both locally at StudioNia/Portland and Step In Studio/Forest Grove as well as internationally, traveling to Australia, New Zealand and Europe. She passionately shares the pleasure, power, and sense of self-discovery that Nia offers people of all ages. She loves that Nia offers people of all ages a pathway to self-healing, fitness, body education and self-discovery. Nia played a key role in the healing of chronic pain, tendonitis and fatigue accumulated through athletic injury (knee and shoulder surgery) and entrepreneurial stress.

Rolf Erickson

Nia Teacher Trainer

I love to move my body. Walking in the woods, gardening, buidling a bookcase, yoga. They're all good.

And then there's Nia. It moves my body every way my body CAN move. It awakens, it energizes, it heals. It creates a flow of inner wisdom and joy within my body. It engages my mind to dance with my body, together as one. It stirs my emotions and gives me the freedom to feel and express myself. It releases my creative spirit to soar and imagine and manifest. And there's music!

Erika Ruber

Nia Black Belt Teacher

I love to share the joy of Nia. Using an expressive and playful style, I invite you to re-connect to your own body and experience the pleasure and power that comes from increasing awareness and expression of sensation. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Wellness Facilitator, I offer workshops, specialized classes, and presentations on the integration of Nia and healing/wellness.

Carol Gonzalez

Nia Black Belt Teacher

Coming from a dance background, I “came home” 20 years ago in my first Nia class. I’ve been sharing the Joy of Nia since 2001, and Now I Am delighted to also train teachers here and abroad in the (amazing) Nia 5 Stages. I love the ongoing connection to self and life through the body. Let’s step in and discover magic together!

Debbie Priest

Nia Teacher Trainer

With a willing heart and an adventurous spirit she nurtures compassionate body-based awareness through the practice of Nia. Debbie has over 25 years experience working with older adults. She's been teaching Nia classes since 2001. Her classes are accessible and easy to follow. She provides the space for freedom, playful self-discovery and self-healing.

Fred Bass

Nia Black Belt Teacher

I came to Nia via the merging of a hip injury that had sidelined me from my life long passion of participating in sports, be it running 5k, 10k, marathons, golfing, softball or the occasional pick up game of hoops. My sister-in-law challenged me to attend her Nia class at a point that I felt I had few alternatives for moving. I bring a sense of balance to class – a balance for your body, mind, emotions and your spirit.
